FISH TREATMENT GUIDE
Here we have listed the most common fish health problems and treatments. It is important to remember that a fish's health has a direct connection to it's environment and therefore good water quality is imperative. Refer to the section on Water Quality.
Anchor Worm: Fish will exhibit small bloody spots usually near fins and tails; sometimes white, hair like worms are visible. Treat with Dimilin or Rid-Ich.
Cloudy Eye: White film over the eyes. Treat with Pimafix.
Dropsy: Swollen belly, protruding scales, reddening, and the appearance of ulcers. There is no effective treatment and is not contagious. Remove the infected fish and destroy painlessly.
Fin and Tail-rot: Tail and Fins rot away. Treat with Pimafix and Melafix.
Fungus: White furry cottony appearance especially on tail and fins. Usually a secondary disease. Treat with Rid-Ich or Pimafix and Melafix.
Gill Parasite: Gills flared out, gasping at surface. Treat with Nox-Ich or Rid-Ich.
Ich: Small white spots especially on fins and gills. Fish appears to be sprinkled with salt. Treat with Nox-Ich or Rid-Ich.
Lice: Fish will rub itself on anything possible. Treat with Rid-Ich.
Oxygen Depletion: Fish gasping at surface. Treat with aeration i.e. Air Pump/Air Stone, Fountain, Waterfall, or increased Filtration.
Pop-Eye: One or both eyes protrude from the head in an unusual fashion. Treat with Rid-Ich.
Tumours: Unusual growths on any part of the body that begin as white cysts and later develope into larger "cauliflower-like" swellings. Tumours are not fatal and there is no effective treatment for them. If the fish appears distressed or other fish begin to develope a similar situation, consider destroying the fish painlessly.
Ulcer Disease: Lesions, ulcers, or sores, reddening at the base of fins, loss of appetite, darkening of coloration. Treat with Melafix and Pimafix.
