The ultimate filter system is a natural one. Submerged plants and scavengers are the silent workers whose vital role is balancing your pond. Competing with algae for dissolved nutrients in the water is the chore of the submerged plants. The plants also trap debris in their foliage and provide spawning media for fish. Consumption of algae and leftover fish food is the job of the scavengers.
One bunch (usually 6 stems) of plants and one scavenger per 1-2 square foot of pond surface is what you need.
All aquatic plants are priced bareroot and are intended for use in enclosed bodies of water. Check with your local extension agency prior to adding any aquatic plants, fish, or scavengers to a non-enclosed enviroment.
